From Sept. 8 through Oct. 27, 2001, The Reece Galleries, Inc. presented a of paintings from the Estate of the late Japanese artist, Tsugio Hattori. The Reece Galleries represented Hattori exclusively from 1984 until his death in 1998, and is the exclusive representative of the Estate. It was the sixteenth one-person show overall for the artist at The Reece Galleries.
Hattori's works are a beautiful blending of traditional far eastern landscapes with the modern vocabulary of Abstract Expressionism. In seeking this aesthetic, he remained faithful to his folkloric culture, creating harmonious yet dramatic suggestions of inner serenity through calligraphy and references to cultural historical periods and movements such as the Theater of Noh. Silk-like in texture, jewel-like in color, the paintings pay tribute to, and were influenced by his mother, a weaver of kimonos, and his father, a master calligrapher.
"His influences range from the writings of the 13th-century Zen master Dogen to works by contemporary New York painters like Helen Frankenthaler and Robert Motherwell. That he manages to interweave these seemingly disparate threads into works of subtle beauty and spontaneity with no trace of preconception is his particular talent."
