Otnes's masterful artistry lies in his technique of blending
elements such as rare manuscripts and newspapers, old sheet music,
pieces of fabric, flowers and photographs into a painterly
background. He captures a classical romanticism seen through a
sepia-toned world of seasonal changes, mathematical principles and
musical moments, in which the human figure often plays an enigmatic
role.
Otnes shares with other modern collagists the mad
conceit that chance is a mainstay of composition, and that chaos can
be a matter of most sublime order. Perhaps that at this ... date in
our cultural day, things are best left to speak for themselves, to
establish their own visual integrity in the face of what's going on
around them. A truly fine madness is the result -- very much its
creator's, and, by politic and poised extension, ours, to our
perplexed, unwavering delight.
